An American war correspondent, Tony Collins, and a former Khmer Rouge child soldier, Sam Rith, reunite after nearly thirty years. Tony helped the world-weary 15-year-old Sam start a new life in the United States. Sam Rith arrived in America, sponsored by Christian couple. But Sam took more than a few wrong turns and ended up spending most of his youth locked up in an American prison before being deported back to Cambodia. Back again in Cambodia and totally without family and friends, Sam found ways to do what he had always done best-survive. Reconnecting with 'old friends'-Tony Collins and the Khmer Rouge cadre who'd made him eat a human heart-Sam opened a new chapter of his life working as a translator at the war crime tribunal. He translated the old horrors of wars, truths and lies for the international press. Reunion tells an unsentimental, powerfully evocative story of friendship, desperation, hope and deception that are part of life. A memorable reunion of two men seeking redempti

Full disclosure: I tend to like the creative output of this author, but not always. His short story, Dolphin Inc., from his Bangkok Noir anthology I did not like, at all. A misalignment - it happens. So I can be objective and as much as I did not like that story, I really liked REUNION by Christopher G. Moore. A very human story. A very poignant story, at times. A very telling story about human emotions and characteristics, both good and bad. Mostly, a very thoughtful story. The gist of it involves a journalist named Tony who meets a Cambodian refugee nicknamed, Sam, at a corrupt refugee camp in the early 1980s, during the course of writing a journalistic story about those camps. An unlikely pairing occurs, and against all odds Sam is allowed to immigrate to California. Life doesn't always work out well for Cambodian immigrants sent to the USA in their teens and such was the case with Sam. Over 25 years later circumstances allow a reunion to take place at a Bangkok airport. The Moore narrative:
That's what reunions normally produce: memories of what we've been through, who we've been, what we've become, and how all those trails have suddenly merged together in an arrival hall in Bangkok.
"Hey, man, you look exactly the same," he said, sniffling.
That was a lie. But it was an okay one.
"You don't look fifteen years old, Sam."
"Was I ever fifteen? he asked. "Was I?"
A lot happens after the reunion. A trip to the Foreign Correspondents Club of Cambodia where Sam speaks. Bridges can be found, everywhere. Some get mended. Some never do. The troubled water swells and recedes in Cambodia as part of daily life. A war crimes trial is in the background and some good conversation over a bowl of noodles takes place. But I wont spoil it. Do yourself a favor and read, REUNION, which can also be found in the anthology Phnom Penh Noir edited by the same author. I wrote this review today, because I found out that this novella was nominated for a top literary award in Canada, today. I hope it wins. But if it doesn't, it's just as good. As long as we live, our past never dies. Even past stories written. Dolphin Inc. was never nominated for an award, to my knowledge. The critics must know something.

Reunion Christopher G Moore 9786167503196 Books Reviews
This story could have been called 'Redemption' just as well. Because that's the point Tony Collins is aiming at by writing down all this - he says...
He who calls himself a career journalist - the one who has written for decades from the battlefields of Southeast Asia for the news services all around the globe. Reporting faithfully all the gruesome details. About human beings - big or small, old or young, of all genders - who had been bombed into oblivion, shot, hacked in small pieces and before that all also tortured in most of the cases.
And he, who has seen and heard really everything unimaginable for us, met in the year 1984 in Chon Buri in a large processing camp for Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees a boy, the 15 year old Rith Samnang. Who was a war veteran himself because he wasn't killed like the rest of his family but used by the Khmer Rouge as a bearer. And he was forced to do unthinkable things to survive. He offers his help as a guide and translator for Tony - gratis, only food, cigarettes and a bottle of whiskey...
And sooner or later the inevitable question 'I want to go to America - can You help me?'. And Tony helped, he was connected, and the Andersons in the U.S. of A. took Rith Samrang - now Sam Rith, in. And he evolved into a notorious lawbreaker who was deported to Cambodia after 10 years, most of them spent in jail.
And now, after almost 30 years, Tony has been contacted by Sam, first via e-mail, then Facebook, and after that they start to speak via Skype. And Tony tells Sam that he will go to Phnom Penh to cover the UN war crime trial. And Sam offers his help again - gratis, only food for words, like in the old days...
But he has an other problem He has an invitation to Bangkok to talk at the Foreign Correspondents' Club. Sam had offered himself to give account about the Khmer Rouge, help out as a translator, too. Ah, translator, storyteller and Killing Fields survivor bundled together - a real lucky strike for the committee that arranged the discussions, are Tony's thoughts. And he pays the ticket for Bangkok. Sam stays with Tony at his flat and his 'appearance' in front of the committee and the audience is a complete success. When Sam tells his story, one lady faints and an other one flees the audience to vomit. Real dynamite, that story is! Sam - a hit at the club!
And then Tony comes to Phnom Penh, and that's Sam's turf. He has yet a job at the trial against the remaining leaders of the Khmer Rouge. And makes an arrangement for Tony to interview an ex-member of the Khmer Rouge troup Sam 'worked' for...
And Tony should have known right there in Phnom Penh that there is no need for redemption.
And that it has to do far more with clearing his own conscience why he was writing down this story - his story and Sam's. And the one of lies and betrayal and other...
Because the greater part of the children of the Killing Fields had been corrupted unsalvagebly - first by the Khmer Rouge and then in the following years in all those concentration camps. 'Damaged goods' - and more in their souls than their bodies. And without any help - especially for the psyche! And sooner or later the artists of survival are emerging - like Rith Samnang aka Sam Rith...
I personally cannot imagine what Tony could have added to try to change the life of Sam to the better. He was yet deeply damaged when they met the first time.
Yes, maybe... he could have left him there. But for better or for worse? We will never know...
This gripping, touching story is from the collection Phnom Penh Noir by Christopher G. Moore where both well known but also Cambodian writers introduce the readers into the underbelly of the capital of Cambodia.
But yet 20 Years ago Mr Moore wrote Zero Hour in Phnom Penh (Vincent Calvino Crime Novel) - a fantastic read for those who want to learn something about the time when the UN troopers patrolled the streets...
And it is very positive that the whole world learns about Cambodia - Kampuchea, a country where a whole generation is reappearing as skeletons under the ploughshares. A country and its children which have suffered unimaginable horrors. And which is together with its people in the middle of some healing process.
But wounds like THESE cannot be closed only by quick visits of Angkor Wat...
Vincent Calvino is CGM's crowning glory. This 'book' is a waste of money. I have all but one of his books but from now on I'll still to Italian American detective in Bangkok only
As always Mr. Moore delivers a solid read. This is my 6th book by Mr. Moore and he has yet to disappoint me. I look forward to his next book.
